Now Everyone Probably Is Hanging Out Without Me

I left my book at the Doctor's office last Friday.  I called when I realized I'd left it and left a message.  I assumed they'd have it sitting right up front for me.  NBD.

Well I went to retrieve it this morning and it was no where to be found.  One girl behind the front desk said she saw it in the patient room so we checked in there.  No dice.

She said, "It was that book about 'Why Won't People Hang Out With Me?' or 'Nobody Wants Me to Hang Out With Them' or something like that right?"

I said, "Right!" Excited that we were getting warmer.

No one could find it.  I left empty handed.  Boo hoo, whatever.

Then it hit me in the car ride to work: OMG.  She probably doesn't know who Mindy Kaling is and she thinks I am reading the saddest, most desperately titled self-help book ever.  I won't go into stereotypical detail, but trust me, this was not the type of woman who watched The Office and The Mindy Project.  I'm 99% sure she didn't know this was a mindless book of humorous essays.

So that was fun.  Now I'm bookless and embarrassed.  Any good book recommendations?  Preferably something new and exciting, but just old enough to be available in hardback??

On the real

Have you heard of this book: Maggie Goes on a Diet?

I heard Ryan Seacrest and his radio friends talking about it on Sirius/XM and apparently it's very controversial!

It's about a young, overweight girl who goes on a diet and then becomes skinny and awesome and good at soccer. Some people are pissed because they think it suggests that you are only a worthy child if you are skinny.

I disagree there and think it's great to promote healthy eating and exercise for kids. But maybe it could be called Maggie Gets Healthy, thereby not encouraging pre-teens to start their vicious cycle of dieting before they even hit puberty.

I also think it's irresponsible to suggest that skinniness and athletic ability go hand-in-hand. I was skinny for the first 20 years of my life and I have never been able to kick, throw, hit, or catch a ball. Does not relate.

Also, the cover art clearly indicates body dysmorphic disorder. I think that's a little too intense for young readers. They are probably more likely to go for a cover of a girl binge eating Birthday cake or passing out on the soccer field from over-exhaustion...I kid. I kid. Childhood obesity is no joke!

Have any of you out there read this book? Would you read it to your kids?

Book Review and Giveaway

Recently I was asked to do a book review for The Time-Traveling Fashionista, by Bianca Turetsky. More information about the book can be found here.

This was a cute book about a young girl who is transported back to a glamorous life on the Titanic in 1912 after slipping in to a vintage gown and escaping her hum drum life as a suburban teen. In her "new" old life, she is the lucky owner of a bevy of enviable vintage gowns, which she has coveted for so long in the present day.

And although I felt a little silly on the plane reading a book with pictures in it (I am 27 after all), the illustrations of the dresses are beautiful. It made me instantly wish I was uber rich and only allowed to spend money on dresses. That way I wouldn’t feel guilty. ;)

It was a fun book that any young lady would enjoy as a little escape from bills and bad clothes. And guess what? Now it can be yours. I was also given an extra copy of the book to give away. To enter to win the book, just leave me a comment with what other book you are reading right now or are planning to read this summer, hopefully on the beach!

Snooki Shakespeare

I am sure that I am in no way legally allowed to reprint these excerpts, but I just had to share.

I was reading InTouch magazine at the gym today and almost wet my pants laughing out loud at these quotes from Snooki's book, "A Shore Thing."

"Yum. Johnny Hulk tasted like fresh gorilla."

"Vin Diesel is hotter than Jesus."

"He had an okay body. Not fat at all. And naturally toned abs. She could pour a shot of tequila down his belly and slurp it out of his navel without getting splashed in the face."

"Gia danced around a little, shaking her peaches for show. She shook it hard. Too hard. In the middle of a shimmy, her stomach cramped. A fart slipped out. A loud one. And stinky."

Y'all. That's a real book. In print. You gotta love America and MTV!
