Be Advised - No Mas Fajitas

In case you were planning on going to K38 on Oleander in Wilmington anytime soon, be advised:  You will be devastated.

It's closing for renovations for 2 months and I could not be more displeased about it.  I love it so.

Sure there are other locations in town, but none are as convenient.  None know me as well (they don't know me at all).  Plus I just need time to grieve.

I went last night for my last feast for at least 2 months.  I almost cried in my black beans.

What will happen to the delightful waitstaff in this interim?  Will I be invited to the grand re-opening?  How many calories and dollars will I unwillingly save by not eating here at least once a week?

So many questions, so little fajitas.  Temporary RIP K38.  You will not soon be forgotten or replaced.

No S'more Meals

I promise I will stop talking about S'mores after this, but remember this post a mere 5 days ago about eating at Crow Hill
Well, in cray cray/scary news, it closed forever 2 days after we ate there.

Thank goodness it closed because of a "poor economy" and not "rat infestation".  That makes me a little less terrified that I ate a restaurant 48 hours before it went out of business.

Restaurants here don't have a very good track record for staying open long.  Future Restaurateurs in Wilmington, NC are a brave bunch, indeed!

S'More Please!

Last night I went to a lovely dinner at Crow Hill in Wilmington, NC.

I don't usually order dessert - I'm a savory bitch all the way - but when someone suggested ordering the S'Mores desserts for the table, I didn't put up too much of a fight.

Cutest Presentation Ever
It came presented like a real campfire S'more setup.  That little blue light you see above the Hershey's Chocolate is an actual flame.  I don't know what was making it stay a'flame for so long (couldn't have been natural), but we actually got to roast our own marshmallows for the S'more sandwich.  T'was very cool.

I just hope that if they ever have super drunk dinner patrons they lie and say that they are all out of the S'mores, because that flame was for real.  It was still burning by the time we left.

Great idea for a restaurant dessert presentation.  And a fitting homage to this Sunday's Ice Cream flavor!  Stay tuned...

The call is coming from the inside

Have I ever told you that I work directly above a Mexican Restaurant?  It's actually not as dangerous as it sounds.  I never, ever want Mexican for lunch, as my employers don't allow nap time.

However, I have noticed something interesting about the people that work there.  When I go get the mail behind the building, because I'm the more important person in my company, I always see an employee of the restaurant sitting in his or her car.  What is this all about?  Are they being sent to timeout?  Do they just love their cars that much?

Whatever it is, it's muy interesante.  And it also reminded my of something else I've never told you.  AKA, the scariest thing anyone has ever said to me:

"Oh, I saw you last night at K38 eating at the bar with your husband."  (That is my all time favorite restaurant in town, btw and it was my coworker who said this to me).

This is scary for a multitude of reasons, but mainly these:

1) He saw me, but I didn't see him.

2) Which means I was eating chips and salsa in the typical fashion that I do when no one is watching - With reckless abandon.

3) He now knows how much and how fast I eat and drink, and he knows that my husband does it too.

4) He knows I live nowhere near that restaurant so it's now out there that I commute for Mexican food.

5) He didn't say "Hi" because after seeing #2-5 he's probably scared I'll eat him too.

After he initially told me he saw me I was wracking my brain trying to remember if I'd eaten food off the table or single handedly finished off a basket of tortilla chips.  Probably both were true, but I can't even remember now.  Selective memory I guess.

On the bright side, I always check all of my surroundings now when entering a Mexican Restaurant, and I try to keep my chip intake to a 100-chip mzimum in case someone is watching.

Fellow Mexican Food Lovers, look alive!  Someone could be watching you too!

I ate Mexican last night

I feel bad for Mexican restaurant menus.  Those poor guys get salsa spilled all over them!

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the dirtiest menu of all?  Mexican.  Fo sho.

Carne AsadAAAhmygod that's good

I am 90% sure that I'm finally moving next weekend. And I'm 99% happy about it. The 1% reservation has do with a lil' something I like to call heaven/Kiva Grill/Baja 38 Grill on Market Street in Wilmington. Also known as The Best Restaurant I've Ever Been to 300 times.

I have been there at least once, but mostly twice a week since I've lived here (often two days in a row). Which has been for about 4 months. So, I've basically had Mexican food 30 times in the last 4 months.

Holy black beans! That's a lot of Mexican.

The saddest part is that I don't even have any shame about it. I finally achieved a status as a "regular". They know my order. I don't have to cook when I go. And I miraculously haven't gained a pound from the 4-month Mexican extravaganza. Maybe it's magical?!

They are so good that no matter how complicated your order, they NEVER mess it up. The only SNAFU I've ever experienced was when a waitress forgot my black beans. And it turns out I wasn't even that hungry that time, so it's like she read my mind and did me a favor by not bringing them to me. Delicious beef plus mind/stomach reading abilities?! I'll take it!!

Give me tex-mex or give me flat abs death. If you haven't been there you are MAJORLY missing out. And if you have been and you didn't get something with the Carne Asada, you obviously hate things that are absolutely FANTASTIC! Seriously, I am going to have to pull another "allergic reaction" email and try to find out what the marinade is. It's that good. Tonight when I ate there I actually told my husband, "I want to make love to this meat." And he agreed...so that's saying something.

Luckily they have 2 other locations in Wilmington so I can go no matter where I end up moving :) Otherwise I might simply wither away...or get really into Italian food.

Indochine Restaurant - Lusciousness Abounds, So Does my Stomach

Last night, to celebrate her 31st wedding anniversary, my husband and I let me mom treat us to a Thai dinner at this amazing place called Indochine. And we feasted!

Check out the menu on the link here.

We started with a delicious appetizer sampler, filled with several things I can't pronounce and 5 delicious dipping sauces, pictured below. Yum + Variety = What more could you want?!

And next, because no one would believe me that we should share entrees, we ordered enough food to find 12 people...for the 3 of us. We will be having leftover Thai for lunch and sensible snacks for the rest of the week. The doggy bag alone probably weighed 10 pounds.

Even though I'm a total newbie to Wilmington, I am going to go ahead and say I know enough to recommend this place to anyone. The inside of the restaurant is great, very Thai/Vietnamese inspired. But the back of the restaurant is awesome sauce. You can get your own personal little Tiki huts to eat in. I've been told this is most luscious during the Spring or Fall when you won't be dripping sweat into your Moo Goo Gai Pan.

Try this place! It was truly amazing service, excellent food, and good company. Just trust me when I say that sharing an entree is still more than enough food for two people. Despite how un-fun that may sound to begin with, I promise you'll be able to breath much better if you share.

@Rejection

Restaurants need to start keeping it real and stop putting their email addresses on their websites if they aren’t going to respond.

I have been rejected via email thrice by restaurant/food establishments.

Once I emailed Tupelo Honey for their pimento cheese dip recipe. I even went so far as to say I was having an allergic reaction to something in the dip and needed to know the whole recipe, including the secret spices. No recipe and no luck!

Then a few months ago I emailed the St. Germain restaurant in San Juan, telling them that if heaven serves food, it would be theirs. I then asked for their shrimp marinade recipe for the sandwich I had ordered there. They never responded! But they did accept my email for something because now I get emails every week from them asking me to donate money to Japan.

Unless I can put that donation on some shrimp and eat it with a pita, no thanks Japan.

And last but not least, Ghirardelli. I emailed those chocolatiers three times about my “sealed for freshness” EMPTY chocolate wrapper I got in a dark chocolate assortment pack. All I received in return was automated responses and empty promises to respond to my email in the order in which it was received.

That was about 2 months ago and I still haven’t heard a response, so I think it’s time to abandon the mission and throw away the evidence :( Defeat!

I guess people who own restaurants just don’t appreciate the psychotic lengths to which one will go for food. My restaurant emailing days may end before they really even began. Talk about a lose-lose!
